How to practice yoga while traveling

You don’t have to forget about your yoga practice because you’re traveling. In fact, yoga is one of the best ways to feel grounded and present when you’re on the move!

With a little preparation and a couple of travel-friendly yoga items, you’ll be ready to take your practice with you anywhere in the world.

In this post, we’ll show you how to practice yoga while traveling.

What you need to pack to practice yoga while traveling

The good news is that, although your home studio might be overflowing with yoga props, you don’t need to bring all of this with you when you travel. All you need are some clothes that are stretchy and comfortable to wear for yoga.

If you can bring a mat with you, great! If not, here are some alternatives:

A Travel Yoga Mat - these fold up small enough to fit in your carry-on and provide lots of grip. As they’re thin, they’re best used on top of a towel or carpet for extra cushioning.

Yoga socks - yoga socks are a wonderful replacement for your yoga mat as they’ll ensure that your feet don’t slide around on your hotel-room floor.

If you’re not using a regular, padded yoga mat or practicing on a soft floor, you might like to use a hotel cushion (or two) underneath your knees to protect the joints.

Be prepared

If you plan to practice yoga whilst away, make sure that you have everything you need ready to go as soon as the yoga mood takes you.

● Consider downloading an app to guide you through yoga flows in replacement of your local studio - Down Dog is one of the very best yoga apps available!

● Create a playlist - create or save a playlist if you prefer practicing with music.

● Essential oils - if you tend to use scents during your practice, bring a small bottle of essential oil with you that you can sprinkle onto your mat or clothes before you start to help you get centered.

Research local studios

Before you leave, spend some time researching whether there are any local yoga classes or studios close to the hotel that you’re going to be staying in.

Whilst you might prefer to practice alone in your hotel room, a wonderful way to experience a place - even if it’s only for a short work stay - is to get outside and live in it! This is also a great way to meet new people, practice with new teachers, and experience alternative styles of yoga practice.

Who knows, you might return home with a newly discovered passion for a style of yoga that you’d never even thought of trying!

The takeaway

Practicing yoga whilst traveling is simple. All you have to do is bring some stretchy clothes, make sure that you’re comfortable, recreate your yoga space with smells, and do some research into local studios.
